Type Locality and Naming

Along Karabil Mountain, Southwest Gissar. N.P. Kheraskov, 1934 (487, p.17). Stratotype on Karabil Mountain. Lower formation in the Takchiyan Gr. It is part of the Karabil Horizon.

Synonym: Karabil Suite, Карабильская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Alternation of reddish-brown clays, siltstone (aleurolites) (predominant at the bottom), sandstones (predominant at the top) with lenses of katun conglomerates and salts at the base. Thickness 20-175m.


Lithology Pattern:

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The suite lies with erosion on the Gaurdak Gr

Upper contact

It is conformably or transgressively overlain by the Almurad Fm or Kattaur Fm.

Regional extent

South-West, South Gissar, Babatag ridge, middle course of the Amudarya River, Bukhara-Karshinsky region.

Fossils

Contains in the lower part ostracods - Sheda polita Mand.; in the upper part - a complex of spores and pollen and ostracods - Cypridea brevirostrata Martins.


Age 

It is attributed to the Berriasian (?). Some authors attribute it to the Tithonian - Berriasian (453; 499); other authors (93; 133; 310; 415) begin the Cretaceous with this suite; others complete the Jurassic (55; 138; 168; 254; 274; 381; 383; 452).
